Frequently Asked Questions

A sleep study is a non-invasive, overnight test that measures your brain and body activity while you sleep. These tests are usually conducted in a specialist sleep lab that is equipped for overnight stays.

An overnight sleep study monitors the activity of the body while you sleep, including:

  • brain wave activity
  • eye movements
  • muscle tone
  • heart and breathing rates
  • oxygen levels in your blood (through a sensor –there are no needles involved)
  • body/limb movements
  • snoring and visual recordings

Sensors are placed on various parts of the body to measure and record these details.

Once the sleep study has been completed, a sleep scientist will analyze the results and the report is reviewed by a Sleep Specialist who will consult with you to establish a diagnosis and recommend treatment or management options.

We offer the follow overnight sleep tests for patients over the age of 16:

  • Diagnostic Sleep Study: overnight test that monitors the body during sleep state
  • CPAP therapy, positional therapy or nasal resistance: monitors the effectiveness of treatment recommended for your sleep condition
  • Multiple Sleep latency test and Multiple Wakefulness test: measure the degree of daytime sleepiness

The Victorian Rehabilitation Centre has agreements with all private health insurance funds as well as:

  • Transport Accident Commission (TAC)
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)
  • WorkSafe Victoria

Most funds cover sleep studies, however you may be required to pay an excess or co-payment depending on your insurance policy. We recommend you contact your individual health fund to confirm your level of cover.

When contacting your health fund, the item number to quote for a sleep study is 12203.

Yes, the VRC Sleep Centre welcomes enquiries and offers options for overseas and self-funded patients. We encourage you to contact us on 9501 8865 for a quote.

Our sleep centre is designed to support a good night’s sleep, with patient comfort in mind. An effective sleep study actually doesn’t required many hours of sleep to measure sleep quality. Although some people find it may take slightly longer to fall asleep, our experience is that most patients do manage to get enough sleep for the test.

The testing equipment can easily be disconnected and reconnected by our Sleep Centre staff to allow you to go to the bathroom. If you prefer, you can request to use a personal urine bottle.

You can have a friend or family member stay with you up until it is time for you to go to sleep for the study. Patients who require an overnight carer to stay with them overnight are advised to discuss arrangements with our Sleep Centre team on 9501 8865 prior to admission.

You will need to be seen by the Sleep Specialist after your sleep study for your results. As sleep studies are specialist tests, doctors who are specialists in sleep medicine are qualified to fully interpret the results, make a diagnosis and advise you of treatment options.

We are happy to reschedule your study. We simply ask that you call the Sleep Unit on 9501 8865 at your earliest convenience if you are unable to attend on your booking day. Please note that a cancellation fee may apply if cancelled with less than 48 hours notice.
